Fourteen-year-old Marianne Mahoney became the newest member of the Northeastern University Women’s Hockey Team when she signed a “letter of intent” in a ceremony to make her an honorary team player. The ceremony was held in Matthews Arena on October 19 while more than 80 people looked on. Mahoney, a Newton resident, has spina bifida and was drafted into the sport “…as part of a program run by Team IMPACT, a Boston-based non-profit organization that matches children who face life-threatening and chronic illnesses with college athletic teams.”  Journalism student Kelsey Luing,’s story “NU women’s hockey team gets a different kind of win: A new recruit,” appeared in Boston.com’s “Your Town,” Newton edition, posted October 10.

Luing is a student in Lisa Chedekel’s “Writing for Your Town” class.
