Design Philosophy of the Sandbox
This lecture discusses how the foundation philosophy of design at CCP Games takes us into strange new places. We will examine CCP’s understanding of games, and how our philosophy guides the design principles and decisions on the ground, often allowing us to overcome conventions, avoid overdesign, embrace emergence and even trust our players. Other topics include the importance of human interaction, fallacy of fun and the importance of painful loss. Examples are chiefly based on the EVE Online MMO (PC) and the MMOFPS Dust 514 (PS3).
Teemu Vilen is a Creative Producer and Content Director at CCP, a game development studio specialized in Massively Multiplayer Online Games. He’s working on the massively multiplayer World of Darkness Online and has shipped multiple expansions to the EVE Online Sandbox MMO. His prior projects range from building other massive virtual worlds to stock exchange mergers and online democracy.
CCP is known for EVE Online, a persistent sci-fi universe that attracted a very devoted community, studied by ethnographers and social scientists for their tribal, exclusive and merciless practices. CCP designed the whole experience to foster emerging social behaviors observed among players, with no hand-holding. The learning curve is steep, the community can be brutal and yet it’s one of the oldest and most committed group of players of all times.
