On Thursday, April 24th at 7:30pm please join us at Centennial Common in front of Ryder Hall for the public opening of .vote, a special collaboration between Philips Color Kinetics and the Northeastern Information Design and Visualization MFA program.
.vote is a transparent, three dimensional LED matrix, mounted on the facade of Ryder Hall that will display information after dark. The students of the MFA program have developed an interactive application that captures, aggregates and feeds back data gathered from the Northeastern community to the light installation on the façade of Ryder Hall. This interactive installation exemplifies how the visualization of public information can contribute to campus life in a meaningful way.
Information Design for Dynamic Media and Light is a required course, part of Northeastern’s Master’s program in Information Design and Visualization, where students learn to translate and communicate information into visual, physical, and virtual forms. Susanne Seitinger, City Innovations Manager at Philips Color Kinetics, and Dietmar Offenhuber, a Northeastern assistant professor, collaborated to create the course objectives, teach the students, and demonstrate the power of outdoor lighting systems in urban settings.
“It’s all about taking complex data and visually explaining it,” said Lauren McCafferty, an Information Design & Visualization MFA student.
