Anjimile Chithambo pays tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Music Industry major Anjimile Chithambo recently wowed Northeastern with her acoustic performance of Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” as part of “A Tribute to the Dream,” the university’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. convocation. We asked Anjimile a few questions about the event, her time at Northeastern, and what she’s working on now. And then she even created a playlist just for the college!

How did you get involved with “A Tribute to a Dream”?
One of the organizers of the event contacted me after seeing me perform a few of my original songs in a video interview I did for Boston-based lifestyle blog Quiet Lunch Magazine.

Being a part of “A Tribute to a Dream” was an amazing experience for me. As a black woman I felt especially honored to be asked to participate in such a meaningful and important tribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. You can watch it here:

What experiences at Northeastern have had the greatest impact on you?
Last semester I took Professor Brad Hatfield’s Songwriting class. I am a singer-songwriter, and this is definitely the best course I’ve ever taken at Northeastern. I learned so much invaluable information about music and I am without a doubt a better songwriter because of this class. I would highly recommend this course to any songwriters out there looking to improve their skills.

What projects are you working on now?
I just released my second EP entitled Saltwater on January 7 with student-run label Loftman Records and I’m currently recording my first full-length LP to be released Fall 2014 on local label Human Nature Records. I’m also the lead singer in local indie rock band MODES. We’re in the process of recording our first EP, to be released on Human Nature Records.

What are your plans for the future?
Write more music, record more music, sell more music, go on tour, and repeat this process until I am elderly.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I love Northeastern!
