Gillian Smith

Assistant Professor – Game Design

Gillian Smith received her PhD in Computer Science from UC Santa Cruz in 2012, where she studied in the Center for Games and Playable Media. Her research focuses on the intersection of artificial intelligence and design: how computers themselves can reason about and create new content for use in a game. In particular, she examines how procedural content generators can be controlled by and interact with human designers, thus enabling new design experiences, including intelligent design tools and adaptive games. She is also interested more broadly in computational creativity, games for education, and issues surrounding women in technology and games. Gillian is jointly appointed between the College of Arts, Media, and Design and the College of Computer and Information Science.
