Lecture: The Decorated School
Dr Catherine Burke, Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge and Dr Jeremy Howard, Art History, University of St Andrews
Dr Catherine Burke and Dr Jeremy Howard lead the Decorated School Research Network , an international project that researches the relationships between architects, artists and educators through the artwork which is integrated into the fabric of school buildings and their immediate environments. The network organizes conferences, publications, and supports a web-based archive for collecting material and documenting those aspects of the school building and surrounds that contain integrated artwork produced by artists, craftsmen and sculptors at or near to the time that the school was constructed. In addition to researching and documenting the visual dimension of the modern school environment, the Network also aims to raise public awareness to the artistic treasures contained in schools, as many of these may be in danger as school buildings are renovated or replaced.
The lecture coincides with the Decorated School workshop taking place at the Northeastern School of Architecture.
