The Graduate Fellowship will provide graduate students opportunities to gain hands-on experience working in ongoing research, learn about preparation of manuscripts for publication and grant applications, attend research seminars, receive mentoring from experienced researchers, and meet local and national experts in the field.
Graduate Fellows will receive both an SGA (12 credit hours per term) and a stipend (usually around $5800 per term). Students are expected to work a regular and dedicated schedule of 20 hours per week devoted to fellowship activities. Fellowships may be offered as a 2-term (academic year) or 3-term (calendar year) commitment depending on project specifics. Multi-year Graduate Fellowships are dependent on performance and availability of funding.
Tasks:
Assist in the research activities of the Institute on Urban Health Research including participation in: preparation of research instruments and protocols; data collection, entry and quality assurance, and data analysis; preparation of data reports; and writing manuscripts for publication and grant proposals.
Requirements:
Candidate must be working towards a Masters or PhD degree, preferably in a field related to the mission of the Institute on Urban Health Research. Availability to work during the week on Mondays – Fridays from 9am to 6pm and past experience working on research projects are required. Proof of previous training in SPSS and experience in data analysis are REQUIRED (NEU offers free training through IS, x5858). Spanish-speaking skills are a bonus. Applicants are encouraged to register for Race, Ethnicity & Health course for the fall 2008 semester, BHS U520. This course is required for all successful candidates.

- Nature of your interest in urban health research and how these relate to your field of study and to the mission of the IUHR
- Academic training in research
- Experience in conducting research including specific role and skills gained in previous research projects
- Specific research skills you would like to gain through your Fellowship experience
- Available start date, availability for the 2008-09 academic year and anticipated availability over summer 2009
5. Two papers (published or unpublished) you have written or co-authored
6. Two letters of recommendation from faculty and/or researchers, and contact information for an additional reference. Preferred references are from researchers whose projects you worked on.
7. GRE scores if you’re a first year graduate student (copy/unofficial transcript is acceptable)
