Center for Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and Nanomedicine Receives $1.5M NIH Grant to Examine Drug Delivery
Vladimir Torchilin, PhD, professor and chair of the department of pharmaceutical sciences at Bouvé College of Health Sciences, was recently awarded a 5-year, $1.54 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Cancer Institute to investigate ways to increase the efficacy of nanocarrier-based pharmaceuticals for drug and gene therapy. Many pharmaceutical agents, such as drugs or DNA, need to enter the cell to carry out their therapeutic properties, and this study will address the challenges of getting these agents into the cell and reaching the target once inside.

Northeastern University scientists have created a rapid method to produce an important faculty of drugs, including drugs to treat Parkinson’s disease and cancer. The team’s method entails creating multiple chemical reactions in a single operation using microwave radiation. Lead author Graham B. Jones, Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Sitkovsky, and Amy E. Kallmerten and Ma Dong, from the Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry Laboratories and the Bouve's New England Inflammation and Tissue Protection Institute, are co-authors.
Pharmaceutical Sciences Professor Alexandros Makriyannis Discovers New Molecule to Treat Chronic Pain
Bouve's Center for Drug Discovery director Alexandros Makriyannis and a team of researchers have created a synthetic molecule that could be used to treat chronic pain in patients with diseases such as diabetes or shingles. The findings were published in Psychopharmacology. The team of researchers included Associate Research Professor Torbjorn U.C. Jarbe, and Chen Li and Qian Liu, formerly of the University of Connecticut.
School of Pharmacy Earns Experiential Education Award
The School of Pharmacy has received a Crystal APPLE award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy for excellence in experiential education in its partnership with the intensive care unit at Boston Medical Center. Debra Copeland, PharmD, assistant clinical specialist, coordinated the program, John Marshall, PharmD, precepted and Arthur Theodore, MD, directed the ICU.
