Department of Physical Therapy

Chair's Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy at Northeastern University, located in the heart of Boston.  Physical Therapy has a long and rich tradition at Northeastern, beginning in the earlier days of Bouve College.

As a physical therapy student at Northeastern University you will have the unique opportunity to enrich your education with real life experiences in the field of physical therapy through our cooperative education program, one of the largest and most innovative programs in the world.  These experiences provide extended exposure to current, state-of the art physical therapy practice in world renowned hospitals and clinics across the globe: from Boston to Peru, Hawaii to Costa Rica or Florida to Cape Town, South Africa.

Our Doctor of Physical Therapy program builds on the university’s core values of interdisciplinary education, urban engagement, international knowledge and cutting age research.  Our exceptional faculty are dedicated to promoting excellence in practice, education, scholarship and community service.  Our faculty are active in the American Physical Therapy Association and engaged in active clinical research and practice. A hallmark of our program is the integration of experiential learning and didactic education whether through use of standardized patients, communication and interaction with community consultants, participation in service learning projects, or engagement in research with our faculty.  You also have the opportunity to consider a concentration in Early Intervention, working with children with known disabilities or at risk for developmental delays. This program is offered in conjunction with the Department of Counseling Psychology.

Students entering our Doctor of Physical Therapy program engage in a 6-year interactive learning experience culminating in a final year with 30 weeks of clinical affiliations at sites across the United States.  We also accept transfer students and students who currently possess a bachelor degree.  Students with a bachelor degree complete their studies in 7 semesters that includes 6 months of cooperative education plus 30 weeks of clinical affiliations.  For further details on the curriculum, please refer to our Physical Therapy Program pages.
