2003 Barry A. Berkowitz Symposium on Biotechnology

Dr. Richard J. Roberts, Research Director of New England Biolabs, was the featured speaker at the inaugural Barry A. Berkowitz Symposium on Biotechnology on November 10, 2003. In his lecture, "Finding New Restriction Enzymes Using Genomics and Bioinformatics," Dr. Roberts discussed the science of his lifelong work with restriction enzymes, which have played a fundamental role in his discovery of split genes and were instrumental during the early phases of the human genome project. Dr. Roberts won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1993.
