Biotechnology at Northeastern University

Biotechnology and pharmaceutical science is the nucleus of a rapidly growing multibillion dollar industry in the US and throughout the world. Scientists and engineers must navigate the dynamics of a heavily regulated but highly innovative industry. Graduate programs in biotechnology, offered by Northeastern University, provide students the opportunity to develiop the knowledge base and laboratory sklls needed to be successful in this expanding and evolving industry.

The University has identified biotechnology as a key investment area because of the recognition of the industry growth potential and the vital role that biotechnology will play in the economic growth of the country. The diverse world-renowned faculty and researchers affiliated with Northeastern University's professional science master's (PSM) in biotechnology programs are built on traditions that have sustained Northeastern for over a century: our leadership in experiential education; our record of educating intellectually dynamic, achievement-oriented students; and our commitment to cultivating mutually rewarding partnerships with businesses in our urban community and throughout the world.

Students choose a specialization focused on molecular biotechnology, pharmaceutical biotechnology, process development, regulatory science, or bioinformatics. They experience hands-on application and laboratory based coursework in addition to classroom instruction providing the foundation of the interdisciplinary degree. Students also gain valuable fieldwork experience through Northeastern University’s co-op program. Co-op provides real-world learning in industry, government, world famous teaching hospitals and academic research labs in the immediate Boston area as well as worldwide.

As we continue to add faculty in biotechnology research and education, and as we produce highly skilled workers for the industry, our academic programs in biotechnology will play an important role in moving us toward our goal of becoming one of the nation's top universities.
