While On Co-op: Tasks to Do and Keep in Mind

While you are on co-op we want you to do a good job, learn a lot, and gain professional experience and insight.

TIPS TO "STARTING OFF YOUR CO-OP WELL"

  • This flier has some great tips to help make your whole co-op more successful and easier to adjust to.

BEFORE - THINGS TO DO WITH EMPLOYER

    CONFIRM START AND END DATES

  • Before you start of your co-op, you should re-confirm their start and end dates for you. The NU dates are always here for your reference point. If you need to start a tiny bit after - or end a tiny bit before the scheduled date, you will need to negotiate that as early as possible (i.e. at the time of hire, within the first few weeks, etc.) with your employer (and let your coordinator know) so that you don't "ruin a good thing" by asking too late in the term.

DURING - THINGS TO DO IN NU ONLINE DATABASE

below is a graphic representation of what you will be asked to do in this database while on co-op:

    CONFIRM SUPERVISOR

  • A couple of weeks into your co-op you will get an email from "coop_help" asking you to confirm your supervisor. This is very important and will help ensure that the "end of co-op" evaluation gets to the correct person. (the link in the email will take you here to do that.)

    CREATE LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • One of the requirements for ALL students WHILE ON CO-OP, is to set (and later assess) Learning Outcomes they would like to achieve. This handout will explain how to best formulate them.

  • Also, see this presentation for a richer explanation of how to formulate good learning outcomes. - Good luck!

    GUIDED INQUIRIES

  • ONLY for students on their FIRST Co-op - Students will be asked to complete 4 Guided Inquiry/Reflections about their co-op. This handout outlines all questions deadlines for the Summer2/Fall 2017 co-ops.
  • This handout walks you through how to get to the system and where to answer these questions.

  • See diagram of guided inquiry timeline below

    SELF ASSESSMENT

  • You will complete this as part of your "end of co-op" reflection assignment.

DURING - THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR ADVISORS

    REGISTER FOR CLASSES

  • Plan ahead in terms of classes you would like to be in when you return from co-op. Talk to your academic advisor way before the "advising rush". And then be sure to Register at your given time.

DURING - THINGS TO DO TO GET MORE OUT OF YOUR EXPERIENCE

GET MORE OUT OF YOUR CO-OP - BUILD YOUR NETWORK

  • While on co-op you will meet and interact with all types of people with interesting jobs and backgrounds. Ask people to do a short Informational Interview with you. You will learn a ton, and make some great connections that might help you later on down the road. Here is a link to a Prezi to tell you more!
