Ethan Levine - Class of 2006
Why did you choose this major, and does/did it seem like the right major for you? Why?
Interest in social work, but not social work curricula - a tremendous class with Robin Adler, way back in the day.
Why did you choose NU? Was/is this the right school for you?
I wanted a big school, diverse both in terms of student population and available study programs. Additionally, it was important to me that I attend a school that was not exclusively populated by top students. The NU of 2004-06 was the right school for me, although I believe that diversity has lessened in recent years.
If you participated in co-op, can you give a quick synopsis of what you did?
Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) - as the Public Education Intern This position was fantastic! I assisted in writing materials for print and electronic distribution, represented GLAD at community events, and provided information & referrals on the Legal Information Helpline. Additionally - and this was probably the best part of the job - I was responsible for tracking press coverage of GLAD cases and any issues relevant to our work.
My co-op at GLAD coincided with my socially transitioning from female to male. It was outstanding to be in such a supportive environment for this, if only 24 hours a week. My writing and research skills improved. I gained a better sense of that branch professional non-profit work (LGBT activism), and emerged confident that I wanted to pursue a career in the field.
Did you have any other "learning from outside of the classroom" (service learning, student leadership, study abroad, research, or volunteering) that also enriched your time here?I did a study abroad in Belfast, Northern Ireland - it was tremendous! It can be costly, but I believe that those who can afford to should make an effort to participate in this program.
Have you Graduated from NU?
I continued to work in the field of LGBT services for some time, and I am confident that my co-op and study abroad experiences assisted me in getting into the New School Masters Program (I'm about to begin my second year!).
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Well, one more thing - I am still overwhelmed when I remember the support I got from you in applying for co-ops as Ethan...Lisa, you are terrific.
