NUSL 40th Anniversary Celebration
October 16-19, 2008
Featuring Anthony Lewis, Two-time Pulitzer Prize Winning Columnist, as the Keynote Speaker
On October 16-19, 2008, we're planning an entertaining celebration of the 40th anniversary of the re-opening of the School of Law. If you're part of a reunion class being honored, we are also planning an event for your class, which will be incorporated into this exciting celebration. Reunion classes include: 1953, 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993, 1998 and 2003.
On Thursday, October 16, we are hosting an evening reception to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the LSSC/LCD Program. Details are emerging on this event and will be available on the Web site. On Friday, October 17, we have several events planned, including panel discussions in the afternoon. Following the panels, there will be a faculty open house with former and current faculty on-hand to share drinks and hors d'oeuvres with graduates from all classes.
This reception will also feature tours of the newly renovated Dockser Hall (see below). Following these events at the school, reunion classes will gather for dinner at the nearby Colonnade Hotel. On Saturday, October 18, there will be panel discussions at the School of Law in the morning. In the evening, we are hosting an upscale evening affair at the John J. Moakley US Courthouse with an exciting keynote speaker -- Anthony Lewis, a Pulitzer Prize winning author and New York Times columnist. On Sunday, October 19, we are planning faculty brunches.
If you are interested in joining a reunion committee, please call Deb Kennedy at 617.373.5126. More details about the events and schedule are available on the 40th Anniversary website.
Our registration website will be "live" in the near future – save the date and make plans to join us!

School of Law to Expand This Summer with the Renovation of Dockser Hall |

Construction is underway!

Rendering of completed project.
The School of Law is in the midst of a significant renovation and expansion of Dockser Hall (main entrance will be on Forsyth Street), which is adjacent to the current law school building. This additional space will increase the School of Law's square footage by 25 percent, allowing for the law clinics to move from their current location at Columbus Place into the law school.
The renovation is scheduled to be completed in early August of 2008. Larger, sun-filled classrooms (including a state-of-the-art Moot Court room), beautiful new lounges and quiet study areas and offices will also be created in Dockser to address space and facility concerns.
We are also pleased that the updated Dockser Hall will receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, making the new addition a "green building."
More information on the renovation of Dockser Hall, including additional pictures, can be found on our web site. |

Student Distinction Program Seeks Alumni/ae Mentors |
The Opportunities for Student Distinction Program (OSD) at NUSL offers a wide range of external opportunities for student accomplishment, including entrance into various moot court, mock trial, and distinguished writing competitions. Created during the 2006/7 academic year, the OSD works to expand NUSL's collaborative and cooperative model of learning by consolidating and integrating outside opportunities for distinction while developing and refining lawyering skills.
External writing competitions comprise a large and important part of the program, and the OSD seeks alumni/ae mentors willing to be paired with a student, based on the competition topic and the mentor's area of practice, for coaching purposes throughout the competitive writing process.
If you are interested in becoming an alumni/ae mentor, please contact Mielle Marquis, Associate Director for Alumni/ae Relations via email at m.marquis@neu.edu or by phone at 617.373.3819. More information will be available soon at www.slaw.neu.edu/alumni. |

| Office of Career Services Rolling Out New Job Database |
The Career Services office will be changing the way we post jobs for students and graduates. As you may know, we currently use Emplawyernet and we will be switching to Symplicity, another web-based database. The expected roll-out date for graduates to begin using Symplicity to search for post-graduate positions is in early June. Once Symplicity is fully operational, we will no longer be using Emplawyernet to post job announcements received by our office.

College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007: |
The College Cost Reduction and Access Act (H.R. 2669) was signed into law on September 27, 2007. The Act provides debt relief for graduates who are repaying federal student loans and are working in public interest.
The CCRA has many implications for public service in the U.S. and will enable many more graduates to pursue public interest careers without regard for debt, which for many years has been one of the major obstacles for public interest minded lawyers.
For more information about the law and what it means to you please visit our website.
Additional information about eligibility and how to opt into the program is available online at: http://www.finaid.org/loans/publicservice.phtml
NUSL is currently in the process of analyzing the Act and will be looking at the possibility of updating the future LD/F program awarding process based on this legislation.
If you have any questions, about the legislation, please feel free to contact Mary Church at the Office of Financial Aid. |
