Program
on Human Rights and the Global Economy
The law school’s new Program on Human
Rights and the Global Economy focuses primarily on economic,
social, and cultural human rights and the impact of globalization on all
human rights.
A kick-off event was held on June 16-17, 2005, with a co-sponsored commemoration
of the 50th anniversary of the South African Freedom Charter (at Harvard)
and our own "expert consultation" on the implementation of socioeconomic
rights at NUSL. Among the distinguished guests were Pius Langa, the new
chief justice of the South African Constitutional Court, his colleague
on the bench, Justice Zakeria Yacoob, Massachusetts’ SJC chief justice
Margaret Marshall, and Massachusetts Superior Court Judge Margot Botsford
‘73. Many Northeastern graduates, students and faculty attended
the plenary session.
Professor Hope Lewis serves as the program's director with a faculty steering
committee composed of professors Margaret Burnham, Dan Danielsen, Martha
Davis, and Karl Klare. Together they are working to develop the program's
projects and external funding. They look forward to hearing from interested
alums and those who are involved in human rights-related work. Please
contact Professor Lewis by e-mail.
Loan Deferral/Forgiveness Program
The School of Law is currently accepting applications for its 2006 Loan
Deferral/Forgiveness (LD/F) Program. The application deadline
is October 31, 2005. Over the past 16 years, the program has
issued more than $1.9 million to 305 graduates employed in relatively
low-paying public interest jobs. The program eligibility cap for 2006
is an adjusted net income of $38,500. More details and guidelines can
be found at the Loan Deferral/Forgiveness Program site.
If you are close to accepting program-eligible employment by November,
please contact Mary Church, in the
Office of Financial Aid, to determine whether you should apply by the
October 31 deadline. The LD/F Program provides financial assistance to
graduates pursuing public interest careers. If you have questions or would
like to contribute to the program, please contact Mary
Church.
