Recent Graduates Honored

Two recent grads — Laura Redman '03 and Anjali Waikar '05 — received prestigious Equal Justice Works fellowships to begin in the fall of 2006.

Redman will be working with the Welfare Law Center in New York City on an Access to Medicaid project. Her project will serve as a clearinghouse for organizations, groups and individuals nationwide through direct representation, collaboration, public education and advocacy.

Waikar will continue her work with the ACLU of Massachusetts addressing post-9/11 racial profiling in Massachusetts. Her project will integrate human rights documentation, community-based organizing, and litigation strategies to counter policies and practices that are targeting people and communities based solely on race, ethnicity, or religion.

The Equal Justice Works Fellowship program is the largest in the nation which offers two-year fellowships to law school graduates working on a variety of social justice issues.
Upcoming Events

On Thursday, August 3, 2006, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the Office of Alumni/ae Relations and Development will hold “Fireflies and Margaritas,” a summer celebration in Exeter, New Hampshire, hosted by Kate Miller '87.

If you are a graduate located in Maine, New Hampshire or northern Massachusetts, consider joining us for this summer evening event. For more information, contact p.fitzgerald@neu.edu.

The Office of Alumni/ae Relations and Development, working closely with Mark L. Irvings '75, is planning a half-day conference on Saturday, November 4, 2006, focusing on labor and employment issues.

We are still formulating discussion topics, but they will likely include issues surrounding the employment of legal and illegal immigrants, a dialogue between private and alternative dispute resolution providers and judges, and the challenges of working inhouse for corporations and unions.

If you have additional suggestions, or are interested in participating by coordinating a session, please contact Mark Irvings directly at mirvings@comcast.net.
