Greg Tracy, CS’95
If you have an idea for an alumnus/a to spotlight, contact Steve Daly in the Office of Alumni Relations. |
It can be a daunting task to form a company and have no idea what function that company will serve.
Such was the situation Greg Tracy, CS’95, found himself in when he and three former co-workers at a medical imaging software company decided to stay in the Madison, WI, area rather than relocate when their employer moved out of town.
“We sat around the conference table for five or six months just prototyping ideas,” Tracy said. “We are all computer science guys, and we were searching for something that would allow us to be creative.”
“We were all developing different applications in the beginning. One of us was doing some work on software to help their daughter learn algebra a little bit better, and somebody else was working on a project to put coupons on a cell phone and make that process a little bit easier. We also experimented with building a collective intelligence game where groups of people would compete against each other in games like chess. We were toying and kicking around a lot of ideas.
“We were playing a lot of online games at the time as well, and started to think about how nice it would be to reuse bits and pieces of a game, and perhaps even add them to the algebra application. We knew there was a need to make sharing software components easier, even for non-programmers. That’s sort of how Sharendipity was born.”
