Testbeds

The Enabling Technology Level is characterized by prototype developments and associated operational testbeds that stem from breakthroughs at the Fundamental Science Level. These testbeds depend on a close collaboration between academic researchers, national laboratories and industry. As an example, we describe a multi-mode suicide bomber detection system which is an extension of a current DHS-funded concept study. The testbed (denoted T1) will incorporate fundamental science results to produce advanced technology elements in a realistic timeframe of ~1-2 years. These elements will be the technology building blocks enabling the COE to ultimately address the Grand Challenges.
