In the year 4 research and development phase we have worked on a THz imager (THz shoe scanner) as well as the fundamental science of THz wave air photonics. We report on our progress on both aspects of the project. Our notable achievements are:
- We have designed a fast-scanning THz wave imager optically and electronically;
- With the initial design we have demonstrated a THz imager with a resolution of 2 mm and an imaging rate of 2 images per sec¬¬ond using a THz gas laser working at 2.52 THz and a Goodrich PY55 pyroelectric detector;
- We have demonstrated line and circular scanners that are capable of high scanning rates and are suitable for a THz imaging system;
- We have published 6 papers in different peer-reviewed international journals and have been awarded with a US patent based on results from our research effort on the science of broadband THz wave photonics.
One of the most meaningful aspects of ALERT is the ability to work on projects directly related to national security to protect our citizens.- Xi-Cheng Zhang, Associate Director & Project Lead
