Our International Community

When you arrive at Northeastern, you will encounter cultures and traditions from all over the world. We welcome applications from students who wish to be a part of this vibrant community. The International Student and Scholar Institute serves as the primary resource to international students representing more than 125 countries, and also organizes a variety of cross-cultural initiatives for all members of the University community. ISSI conducts orientation programs each semester, publishes a newsletter, and coordinates diversity education and leadership training programs. Its annual two-month cultural festival, International Carnevale, promotes interaction, understanding, and friendship among students and scholars of all nations and cultures.

The staff also assists nonimmigrant international students with immigration-related issues, including SEVIS compliance and related federal regulations, ensuring they maintain lawful student status. ISSI issues visa eligibility documents (forms I-20 and DS-2019), serves as a liaison for sponsored international students, and coordinates seminars on topics that range from employment/co-op to intercultural issues.

In addition, the ISSI has a Global Conservatory that houses an Intercultural Library and Resources Area that houses resource materials in many languages and offers a venue for events and programs with a cultural focus.

English Language Center
The English Language Center
offers intensive classes for students whose primary language is not English. The center also provides student conversation groups; monitored laboratory sessions in reading, writing, speaking, and listening; counseling; and assistance with University applications. Students may be accepted into the University pending successful completion of the program.
