On the NU freshman experience
As one of the College of Engineering’s Gateway instructors, Freeman specializes in teaching first-year students. “We set freshmen up for success in the engineering program by inspiring them with high expectations and guiding their transition from high school to college,” she explains. Students take foundational courses with the same instructors and classmates all year long, creating a supportive community.
Freeman and her fellow Gateway instructors meet every two weeks during the academic year to discuss how the courses are progressing. “Our goal is to create a better experience for freshmen,” she says. And students benefit from that effort. “Because we get to know our students so well,” Freeman says, “we can look for ways to raise the bar and challenge top students.”
