Human Resource Management - Performance Planning and Appraisal

Policy

Subject Area: Compensation
Policy Title: Performance Planning and Appraisal
Policy / Procedure No: HRM008
Responsible Office: College/Area departments, HRM - Compensation

PURPOSE: To provide a method of appraising performance, rewarding achievement, and motivating employees.

SCOPE: Full-time and benefits-eligible administrative/professional staff; weekly support staff.

POLICY:

1. All employees should receive a written performance appraisal from his or her manager at least once a year.

2. All administrative/professional staff should receive a written performance evaluation annually at a focal point in a year. Guidelines for performance appraisal (http://www.hrm.neu.edu/forms.html) are prepared by HRM and distributed to department heads in advance of the appraisal deadline. Admin/professional staff may receive a merit increase based on individual performance and the guidelines of that fiscal year's compensation program.

3. New office/support and technical staff are given an initial review three months after employment begins, and then annually based on their anniversary date of hire. While salary increases are not part of the three-month review process, annual anniversary date reviews may be accompanied by a merit increase based on individual performance and the guidelines of that fiscal year's compensation program.

4. Service staff whose positions are not covered by collective bargaining are evaluated based on their individual anniversary dates of hire.

5. When a supervisor or manager determines that an individual's performance is less than satisfactory, the supervisor should contact his/her area's HR Consultant to develop a plan of corrective action prior to meeting with the employee.
