Award Recipient

emmaHope Ianiri, S’16, chemistry major, environmental studies and Spanish minors

Hope wants to use her considerable chemistry and research skills to help solve environmental problems. On her second co-op, she worked as a climate change and organic geochemistry research assistant at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where she analyzed sediment cores for new and existing biomarkers of climate change. In the summer of 2015, she was one of only 15 students accepted into the prestigious Maryland Sea Grant’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates program, which is funded by the National Science Foundation to conduct marine research on the Chesapeake Bay. This fall, Hope will continue that research as a doctoral student in chemical oceanography at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
