Dragon Ladies
dragon lady n. a powerful or
tyrannical woman; also : a glamorous often mysterious woman; specifically,
an Asian woman
In recognition of the fact that our identities
are multifaceted and dynamic, the Asian American Center has created
a group with the unique goal of addressing the issues and experiences
unique to Asian American women. Today’s society continues to perpertuate
stereotypes and expectations of Asian American women that have a considerable
effect on our experiences in school, in the workplace, and with our
families and friends. By coming together to talk about these experiences,
we hope to be able to move beyond these stereotypes, grow stronger from
our experiences and learn how we as a community can take the next step.
It is our hope that by coming together, we will
be able to reclaim the moniker “dragon lady” to mean “an
empowered Asian American woman who will be a force in this world.”
Topics that we hope to address over the course
of the semester include:
-
family expectations and responsibilities
-
the model minority myth + sexism
-
self image and standards of beauty
-
dating & relationships– you, your significant other,
your parents, inter-racial dating
-
and of course, anything else that we decide is important to
talk about!
