Northeastern University Asian American Center
AAC Asian American Literature Book Club

NamesakeThe Asian American Center is proud to sponsor Northeastern’s first Asian American Literature Book Club. In collaboration with the Northeastern Bookstore, the Center offers members of the community with a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful and thoughtful literary discussions that delve into a variety of cultural, political, social, and personal issues related to the Asian American experience.

Who Can Join the Book Club?

The Book Club is open to anyone in the Northeastern community who is a current student, faculty, or staff member. The only requirements are 1) an interest and passion for reading, 2) an interest in Asian American issues and identity development, and 3) dedication to attending the planned meetings and events associated with the Club. Please note that the deadline to sign up for this year is Friday, January 12, 2007.

How Many Books Will We Read? How Many Can Join the Club?

The goal for this year is to read 2 books per semester, or 4 books for the entire academic year. Selection of the books will be based on availability of author, relevance of book to current issues/topics, specific interest of group members. This year (2006-2007), the Book Club will be limited to 30 members. Preference will be given to having a healthy balance of students, faculty, staff, and other interested parties, along with a first-come, first-serve basis.

Ideally, the Book Club will be able to bring the authors of the selected books to campus for speaking engagements. If possible, the author will participate in a reading/engagement for the Northeastern community and a private dinner/discussion for Book Club members.

How Many Times Do We Meet?

The group will meet twice to discuss a single book and meet with the author (whenever possible). For each meeting, 1-2 members of the group will be responsible for leading the discussion. The Book Club will meet during Thursday activity blocks in the afternoon, for 1.5 hours.

Do I Have To Pay for Anything?

There are no costs or membership fees associated with the Book Club. Thanks to the support of the Northeastern Bookstore, all books will be provided by the Asian American Center to the members for free. Depending on the interests of the participants, arrangements may be made to share the responsibility of providing snacks and beverages for regularly scheduled meetings.
