AASIA Student Coordinators

Julia (Eunji) Kim

Hometown: Andover, MassEJK

Major: International Affairs

Julia is a third year International Affairs student who meandered into the APIDA (Asian Pacific Islander Desi American) community and never left. She became involved as a peer mentor in the Asian American Students In Action program, and soon began dancing with the Vietnamese Student Association, helping out the Chinese Student Association on their Events Committee, and meeting other Koreans in the Korean American Student Association. Through her experiences in these organizations, she realized the importance of having a space to explore identity and decided she wanted to help create one herself.

Julia hopes to help foster a similarly welcoming space as AASIA Co-Chair, and learn from and help fellow students as they peer into their APIDA identity and question the roles of APIDA people in social discourse and institutions. In her free time, Julia likes to take naps, bop her head to danceable music, and read

Sam Tan

Hometown: Silver Spring, MD screen-shot-2016-09-29-at-12-39-34-pm

Major: International Business, concentrating in Finance

Sam came to Northeastern looking to learn more about business, and decided to pursue a degree in Finance within the scope of International Business. Prior to attending Northeastern, Sam attended the Academy of the Holy Cross, where she rowed for the school’s crew team and designed sets for the school’s theatre program. While she was grateful for the experiences, the lack of Asian American community at home motivated her to become involved in the APIDA community at NEU.

After starting her work study job at the Asian American Center in her first year, Sam was quickly propelled into the APIDA community on campus. She soon joined AASIA as a Mentee, which she credits with giving her the confidence to be a leader in organizations like CSA where she held the co-title of Freshmen Representative. In her second year, she went on to be an AASIA Mentor, as well as CSA’s Treasurer. Her interest in the prosperity of the community were inspired by the great relationships she made within the AAC’s home-like walls and by the insightful discussions held in AASIA’s brave space. Sam subsequently participated in Barkada, the Filipino cultural club, and became a member of Alpha Kappa Psi, a co-ed professional fraternity.

Sam primarily identifies as Filipina-Chinese American, and is still learning more about the other facets of her identity. On her free time, she enjoys going to art museums and coffee shops, exploring the city, and trying different restaurants (much to her wallet’s dismay). Sam finds joy in being among good company, and is looking forward to the coming year of AASIA!

  • Favorite self-care method: I like to sit/lay down and listen to music and just focus completely on the sounds. It helps me take my mind off whatever else may be going on, relax, and re-center myself. Very simple yet refreshing method of self-care!
  • Favorite Northeastern memory:This past year I helped organize a viewing party for the League of Legends World Championships. Over 80 people showed up at 7am on a Saturday, and the room was filled to capacity. The success of the event far exceeded our expectations and it was amazing to see all the hard work pay off!! I've also had plenty of great times with my CSA family the Orange Zhus, from our spontaneous Bubble Tea trips to our random cooking adventures!

    • Drake, Lana del Rey, Hoodie Allen/New Girl, Scandal, Game of Thrones/The Social Network/ The Great Gatsby

  • Favorite self-care method: My favorite self-care method is treating myself to a nice meal or dessert
  • Favorite Northeastern memory: I have quite a few great memories from Northeastern that stick out. Joining AASIA, attending the 2015 Empower Retreat, and serving on Hall Council for two years are just some of them. Mostly, any time I am around good people and having a few laughs are some of my favorite moments.

Alice Ding

  • Pronouns: she/her/hersalice
  • Year: 3rd
  • Major: Computer Science & Marketing
  • Hometown: Glastonbury, CT
  • Favorites:
    • TV Show: Avatar the Last Airbender, Parks and Recreation, The Office, How I Met Your Mother, Modern Family, Once Upon A Time, Game of Thrones, Fresh Off the Boat
    • Book: Percy Jackson series
  • Hobbies: Eating good food/drinks (bubble tea!!), going to the gym, meeting up with friends, watching TV shows, playing video games, making gifs
  • Favorite self-care method: I wouldn't say I have a method that's a /favorite/ persay, but I think it's important to know your limits and know that it's okay to say no. I know that I can't be everywhere at once and that quality is better over quantity; don't take on more than you can handle, and know that just because you say no now doesn't mean you have to continue to do so in the future. Maybe now's not the best time to undertake something and if you know you'll be given the opportunity in the future, then even more of a reason to push it off. If you can't give your 100% while doing something, or your heart's just not in it, then it's okay to say no.
  • Favorite Northeastern memory: This isn't just one memory, but a reoccurring event that a few of my friends and I have done this past semester is going on several day trips. With co-op, the amount of free time we have is more than we can really handle just by lazing around so we've gone to Cape Cod, Maine and a few other places just to hike, bike, look at the scenery and eat lots of yummy food. We've explored more in the past five months than I have in the past five years and I have to say that without being here at Northeastern and participating in the co-op program, I don't think I would've had to opportunity to move outside of my comfort zone and take trips like this anywhere else.

  • Hobbies:I like watching performances from plays to musicals to concerts. Every weekend, I try to find a new coffee shop. In my free time, I like reading Eric Barker's articles on productivity and happiness.
  • Favorite self-care method: I'm a fan of meal prep Sundays. I spend a large portion of the afternoon cooking yummy food for the upcoming week.
  • Favorite Northeastern memory: At SASE's annual Museum of Science Scavenger Hunt, I ran around the museum as a raptor, looking for participants to infect. As someone leading the event, I would deceive people by asking them if they needed help and then tag them. Each minute they were infected, the team would lose points. To stop the point deduction, they would find a scientist who would cure them by performing some random task. I remember a group of college students singing a Whole New World in the middle of the museum. People not in the hunt always just think we're crazy college students.

Christine Gee

  • Pronouns: she/her/hers christine
  • Year: 3rd
  • Major: Computer Science & Biology
  • Hometown: Long Island, NY
  • Favorites:MUSIC: I'm not much of an artist listener, but my taste ranges from Frank Sinatra to Indie & EDM (https://soundcloud.com/genuinelygee) // TV: Gilmore Girls, Game of Thrones // MOVIES: Into the Wild, Joy Luck Club // BOOKS: Hopscotch - Julio Cortazar, Tuesdays with Morrie - Mitch Albom
  • Hobbies: When I'm not geeking out with a full dose of caffeine, I enjoy late night conversations and cheesy witty banter, kayaking, playing piano, reading a good book alongside some soothing tunes, and watching movies. I love cooking, and firmly believe that Sriracha makes almost everything better. I dance like a maniac without a sense of rhythm (but do it anyways with music blasting), can't walk past a dog without staring, and love trying new restaurants.
  • Favorite self-care method: I grab some sunglasses, headphones, and sometimes a good iced coffee to take a long walk by myself--although nature walks are best, Newbury will do. Nothing beats people watching and feeling a light breeze on your bare skin; but the best part is when you get home, order takeout with close friends and just talk until the morning with movies in the background and facemasks cleansing your troubles away.
  • Favorite Northeastern memory: I went to New Orleans my 2nd year through the Intervarsity ServeUp alternative spring break trip. A 30+ hour bus ride later, I learned more than I could even imagine about justice through racial reconciliation, gentrification, and how my ethnic identity relates to our community. I refound my passion for learning, asking questions, and sometimes annoyingly prying into other's passions. Gumbo and beignets tasted even better by being enlightened by people that I would never have met in my classes or sorority life. I can't wait to make more memories with you all!

  • Favorite Northeastern memory: Joining AASIA was probably the smartest thing I did my freshman year/last year. I met so many amazing PAAC people there and it ultimately led me to finding my place in VSA! The people that have come into my life during my freshman year have exceeded my expectations by far and I will be forever grateful as I have learned what friendship really feels like. After getting involved in VSA, I think my favorite memory last year was/is getting on VSA eBoard. I've never done anything related to school organizations before and getting on felt stunning; I had achieved something I could never have dreamed of prior to arriving on campus. Perhaps it was my time spent with AASIA, or my trusty roomie, Long, but either way I am so happy I get to help next year's VSA and AASIA be a blast!

  • Favorite Northeastern memory: Having the opportunity to meet and create meaningful relationships with the wonderful people in the Asian American community here at Northeastern. If I'm being honest, I often felt like an imposter whenever I attended the meetings or events of the assorted cultural clubs. But the people were always welcoming, and over time, acquaintances became friends. General meetings became jam sessions which became a performance at the first CSA culture show. My "Asian American Experience" classmates turned from study buddies to true friends and my life's biggest inspirations. Bubble tea dates and late nights at the Asian American center only begin to describe my favorite memories at Northeastern, and I look forward to making more.

We stayed two weeks in the South and learned about Islam, Christianity, and Judaism, and then we went to the North to walk 150 miles of El Camino de Santiago. I made so many great friends, stayed fit, became more spontaneous, and learned so much about history, others, and myself.

Michelle Lee

  • Pronouns: she/her/hers michelle-lee

  • Major: Health Sciences
  • Hometown: Queens, NY
  • Favorites: J. Cole, Beyonce, The Chainsmokers, Drake, Kygo, Galantis, Parks and Recreation, Scrubs, How To Get Away With Murder
  • Hobbies: I love watching people dance and going to dance workshops. I also love going on food adventures, exploring new places with friends, playing board games (especially Taboo or Cranium!), swimming, volunteering, listening to some killer remixes on SoundCloud, and trying new things.
  • Favorite self-care method: Being a potato. Sometimes, after a long day at school or work, all I want to do is unwind into my potato form. This may consist of wrapping myself into a blanket burrito, watching an unhealthy number of beauty guru Youtube videos, then proceeding to munch on Hot Cheetos (to which I usually end up sitting on the floor while doing so), and finally, watching an unhealthy number of cute animal videos and sharing them to all my friends. However, when I choose not to be a potato, I love walking around campus or Boston aimlessly to clear my mind. Just being outdoors is my escape.
  • Favorite Northeastern memory: Oddly enough, my favorite Northeastern memory is the late night talk I had with my last roommate before the first day of school. We ended up talking until around 4am, pretty much trying to cram our life stories within a matter of hours. Talking to someone and learning more about them with no filter at 4am is the greatest thing. It was different from the small talks we both encountered with other students from orientation. We were both transfer students so we understood the struggles of being a transfer student and would joke about it often. During Welcome Week, we went to as many events as we could together encouraging each other to be social and leave our comfort zones. Unfortunately, we were great friends, but not the best roommates. However, I still appreciate all the memories we shared together.

Rebecca Lichi Chan

I'm a huge foodie, and I'm out to try anything from new cuisines to trending desserts. I am also constantly reading the news on my phone; when I'm not, I'll be indulging in board/online games with friends. I love swimming, badminton, photography and ice-skating!
  • Favorite self-care method: My self-care method may seem counter-intuitive: I have to let it all go by analyzing and talking about the issue at hand with friends and then re-charge by spending the rest of the time being silly with them! Eating good soul food and sleeping well also definitely helps. Afterward, I make a detailed plan to move forward with, so I can be as efficient as possible when I wake up the next day and feel confident that things will improve!
  • Favorite Northeastern memory: My favorite Northeastern memory was actually PAAC retreat of 2015. I was happily surprised to feel so welcomed by representatives from every organization. I felt the sincerity and ambition from each person I met there, and it definitely inspired me to do more! I had stepped out of my comfort zone and taken a large role in KPL that year as E-Board liaison to re-build connections and kinship amongst the organizations, and I was glad to have PAAC's support through all the tough times.

  • Year: 3rd
  • Major: Computer Science
  • Hometown: Bayside, NY
  • Favorites: Lisa Hannigan/Game of Thrones/The Imitation Game/The Ranger's Apprentice
  • Hobbies: Sleeping, "trying out new cuisines", cooking, coding, solving problems the easy way, managing fundies I, going to conventions, trying out various activities at least once, traveling, and trying out new clothes.
  • Favorite self-care method: Buckle in and sleep it out if I am angry. If I am stressed I get worked up in a video game and just let it all out bashing the enemy's skull in. Or you know just go down mid and circle around to B as T on Cache. Easy easy.
  • Favorite Northeastern memory: Currently rescuing that duck. But for real probably fall semester of 2015 when I died getting my four As. <- Died real hard a couple of times. With three deadlines a week all within a day or two of each other, keep in mind that music editor was some random jumble that they made up as the semester went on, one starts prioritizing things underneath what would bring you the most time before that 11:59:59 pm deadline. Makes you start questioning and wondering things. The number of times I felt so lost and questioned my place in my major are uncountable. But now its just "Yep had it way tougher than this, this'll be easy". But NAAAAAAAA that was a favorite memory for myself. If I had to pick a favorite memory for a group of people it'd probably be both of the paintball events with VSA/SASE. Runner up would be the 10th gala for the AAC.
