Every year during our annual Inspir(Asian) banquet students are selected to receive the Helen Zia Award for Leadership, Ronald Takaki Award for Community Engagement, and the Student Engagement Award.

Helen Zia Award for Leadership

The Helen Zia Award for Leadership is given to a graduating undergraduate student who has demonstrated positive leadership and initiative in promoting the development of the Asian American student community through advocacy work, programming, or involvement in key initiatives at Northeastern.  This student has an awareness of what it means to be a leader in the Asian American community, and has grown as a leader during their experiences at Northeastern.  Nominations should include specific examples of the nominee’s leadership capacity, beyond simply implementing programs on campus.

Helen Zia is a Chinese American journalist, and activist. She is the author of Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People.

Ronald Takaki Award for Community Engagement

This award is given to a graduating undergraduate student who has demonstrated significant commitment to the Asian American community on or beyond campus. This student has not only been involved in the Asian American community, but has taken the initiative to become more engaged in bringing visibility and voice to the experiences of Asian Americans.  The recipient of this award will have demonstrated an evolving awareness of the Asian American community and an on-going commitment to the Asian American community.  Nominations should include specific examples of the nominee’s engagement with the Asian American community, whether specifically at Northeastern or in the Boston area.

Ronald Takaki was an American historian and author. He known for publishing many works but especially for Strangers from a Different Shore: A History of Asian Americans, and  A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America.

Student Engagement Award

This award is given to student(s) who have demonstrated a commitment to engaging the Northeastern Asian American community through advocacy, programming, support services, or involvement in key initiatives that promote the goals of the Asian American Center. The recipient(s) of this award must demonstrate this commitment to student engagement during the academic year it is awarded. This is the newest award the AAC bestows in order to honor an active, and engaged student who is an undergraduate 2nd year-junior.
