Northeastern University Affirmative Action and Diversity
The Diversity Grant Program

Next deadline: TBA (2008)

Program

The Office of Affirmative Action and Diversity solicits proposals for innovative and educational projects or activities that have the following goals:

1. To encourage collaboration between different campus communities and constituencies.
2. To promote mutual respect.
3. To enhance the understanding of diversity and social justice.

Eligibility

Undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and staff, as individuals or groups, are eligible to apply. A collaborative group may submit only one proposal per cycle.

Award criteria

The proposed activities must fulfill the following criteria:

1. Bring together persons from two or more communities or constituencies in a joint activity.
2. Demonstrate collaboration of communities or constituencies in preparation for diversity grant proposal.
3. Plan a joint activity that promotes mutual respect and enhances an understanding of diversity and social justice on the campus or in the larger community.

Preference is given to activities that demonstrate collaboration between individuals or groups who have not previously worked in partnership and for activities that could serve as models for replication.

Sample activities

Examples of activities that could be funded include forums; diversity dialogues; speakers; film or video series; seminars; workshops; public education programs about multiculturalism, diversity or hate crimes; outreach to elementary and secondary schools; community public service programs; faculty/student collaboration to develop new courses; performances; printed materials and posters.

Types of Grants

There are two types of grants, depending on the amount requested. Diversity Full Grants and Diversity Incentive Grants. Diversity Full Grants range from $501 to $1,000 and Diversity Incentive Grants range from $200 to $500. Each grant period has a deadline by which the project must be completed. See "Proposal Deadlines" for this information. These grants have different application procedures, described below.

Funding may only be provided through grants to a Northeastern department, campus center, or registered student organization. The vice president or director of such unit must provide a signature in the section "Endorsement by Director/President" located on the Budget Form. We also strongly encourage collaborators to contribute to the project budget.
